To the rhythm of geometry

Learning by singing brings numerous benefits to the education of children. The songs are a powerful educational tool used to memorize poems or class lessons. Learning by singing is a way to make the learning process much easier and also children enjoy singing. The benefits of learning by singing are the following: - It improves the musical ear of children. - Learning by singing reinforces memory. - It helps to organize and coordinate better the movement of children. - Singing while learning facilitates social relationships between children. Here I leave an example to teach angles and lines in Primary Education in a much more attractive.

Mosaics

Imagen
The mosaics are the covering of the plane by means of figures, in such a way that they do not overlap and there are no gaps between them. The pieces that are used are called tessera. There are many ways to get a mosaic. The simplest ones are formed by regular polygons of the same type (for example squares, or regular hexagons, or equilateral triangles), but you can also form mosaics by combining several types of polygons. Although one could say that mosaics belong to the area of geometry, a lot of mathematical concepts are worked with it. Like the symmetry and axis of symmetry, estimation of results, visual coordination, the concept of surface, spatial representation, rotation... besides creativity and fun.

Learning geometry with plasticine and toothpicks

Imagen
With this simple resource, children will learn geometry by playing in a very fun way. It is an activity that is perfect for any time and we only need toothpicks, plasticine and geometric figures cards. This activity consists of reproducing geometric figures with balls made of plasticine and wooden sticks. It will only change the size of our geometric shapes. It is advisable to start with the figures in two dimensions to familiarize ourselves and explain to the children that each ball represents a vertex and that they will serve to join the sticks. Each stick represents the sides of a geometric figure. In each of the cards, we find a box with the number of vertices and sides that we need to make a figure. Once we have the form in 2 dimensions we can move to assemble the forms in 3 dimensions that derive from it, like prisms, pyramids...

Manipulative materials

Imagen
Children’s hands are the door that opens their world of experiences with which they will build their image of reality, since their interaction with the environment will determine their level of knowledge. As long as they have the best opportunities to get to know, the possibility of expanding your knowledge and to establish guidelines that lead to greater performance will grow. Manipulative materials are beneficial for elementary students, since it helps to understand information and concepts better when it is presented through practical activities. The manipulable math objects that can be touched, moved and manipulated in a variety of activities are ideal for students. Some examples: Geometric blocks These geometric shapes are a seemingly simple material but with infinite possibilities to discover and consolidate mathematical concepts that range from the discovery of geometric shapes to relationships and equivalences on the area. In addition, children will be encouraged t...

Resources for the teacher to use with pupils in the classroom

Imagen
I have found a very useful web page to reinforce the learning of basic concepts of Geometry in Primary Education. Through this web link, you can work the geometric figures  (straights and flats, triangles, quadrilaterals, perimeters and surface, parallelograms, prisms, pyramids and round bodies)  in the second cycle in a more visual way. It has caught my attention because it is another alternative to teach contents in the classroom without using the textbook. For this reason, I invite you to visit this website: http://cerezo.pntic.mec.es/maria8/bimates/geometria/index.html

Origami and Geometry creating paper tulips

Imagen
Is there a better way to learn geometry than by building it with our own hands? The modular origami is to make figures using several papers that will lead to individual pieces called modules. Each of these modules will have flaps and pockets, which will be used to assemble them together. The folding of each module is usually quite simple and the polyhedra are usually the models chosen for this type of modality. The modular origami has an aesthetic and artistic value that is evident at first sight and a mathematical interest that it can be specified in the following points: The folding and assembly of the modules allows to experiment in a simple way with the concepts of face, vertex, edge, index, and with the properties of regularity, symmetry, degree of a vertex, etc. The geometric figures made with paper give the physical representation of abstract entities and in this sense improves the presentation of these objects can be achieved through a computer program to b...

Why is it interesting to integrate educational apps in the classroom?

Imagen
Nowadays, learning occurs in very different contexts and in multiple ways. Example of this is the case of the technologies that we use in our day to day, thanks to which we can continue learning outside the classroom. One of these technologies is the mobile, a very powerful tool since in a single device of small dimensions we have access to a multitude of applications.  The use of educational apps in the school environment presents numerous advantages as they allow learning in any context, inside and outside the classroom. The great popularity of mobile devices among people of all ages makes educational apps have a positive influence on student motivation. Educational apps usually have an important recreational component, since starting from the gamification, they integrate the typical dynamics of the game and reward to achieve the learning objectives. This allows the student to learn while playing. These educational applications also encourage a great interaction of ...

Relation of Geometry with Nature

Imagen
Geometry is a part of mathematics that is responsible for studying the properties and measurements of geometric figures in the plane or space. According to Pappus, one of the last great Greek mathematicians of Antiquity; the bees, by geometric intuition, know that of the three regular figures (hexagon, square, triangle) the hexagon is the most efficient figure to store honey. It can be demonstrated, mathematically, that indeed the hexagon, of the three given, is the perfect figure to perform this task. In relation to this, we can appreciate geometry in nature and in different ways: Circular shapes The circular and spherical forms abound in nature, we can see flowers, fruits, celestial bodies, among many things that adopt these forms. Hexagonal shapes As I said before, the bees do not know that, among the three evaluated, the hexagon is the perfect form for the construction of the cells that form the honeycomb, if we look for efficient forms the cir...

Importance of Geometry in Primary Education

Imagen
The learning of geometry in school is of the utmost importance since all our surroundings are full of geometric shapes; in everyday life, basic geometric knowledge is indispensable to properly orient oneself in space, making estimates about shapes and distances, to distribute objects in space. The space of the child is surrounded by geometric elements, with concrete meanings: doors, windows, floors, boards, desks. In his everyday environment, at home, his city, school and play spaces he learns to organize mentally and to orient himself in space. This is the appropriate context to develop the geometric teachings, in a meaningful way for the students.  From these family situations and manipulative mediators can develop the development of geometric concepts.

Origin and concept of Geometry

Imagen
Geometry is as old as man. Nature offers us different forms that by observing them and comparing them with the geometric shapes that we know today, we can say that they are identical; they are the ones that have inspired man to create this branch of Mathematics. The meaning given to the word Geometry is “measurement of the earth”, precisely because of the fact that it gave rise to it. Although in the beginning the geometric knowledge was limited to calculations of areas and volumes, centuries later we can find great advances in the development of this science. For thousands of years to this day, geometry is an important framework in our lives. In addition, it occupies a block of contents in the Primary Education curriculum. As an element that belongs to our living space, it can be said that it appears in certain contexts such as music, nature, painting, etc. Specifically, the theme of geometry related to the elements of nature will be discussed, since what better topi...

Introduction

Hello everyone! Welcome to my blog! I ’ m Rosario, a student of 3ºB in the Degree of Primary Education at the University of Málaga.  This is a blog for Didactics of Geometry subject in which I'm going to share interesting information related to this subject. I will talk about Geometry but taking into account aspects related to this field using visual and attractive items. To begin with, I would like to clarify what is Geometry and its origin. So... let's start!
